Well this month started off with a great April fools joke on us. We awoke to some white snow and a two hour delay for schools. Will old man winter please give up for 2011? I really hope so. This is April you know!
I thought this week I would list some things happening at Ocean City Maryland this year. Some of it is also very new for the beach this year. When coming to the shore it is always nice to enjoy the sun, ocean and sand, but there are lots of other things to do in Ocean City Maryland as well.
Have you ever wanted to see huge kites all different shapes and sizes? Watch the boardwalk become a beautiful rainbow of color or learn to fly one? Well April 29, 2011 to May 1, 2011 Ocean City will hold the Maryland International Kite Expo. My family has gone to such and the opening photo of this blog shows just some of the unique kites that are on display. This is a very family oriented event and there are many things offered for the kids to get involved with regards to the kites as well. We really enjoyed our day when we visited such and were very surprised of some of the sizes the kites were. One of the funniest moments was Randy and Colby racing with kites on their backs on the beach along with other parents. It truly is something those that put this event on make fun for the kids no matter the age.
Do you enjoy high speed excitement? The roaring of a jet flying by over the Atlantic Ocean? Then come out to see the Ocean City Air Show. This event for 2011 will be held from June 10, 2011 to June 12, 2011. The main show center is ocean front on 16th street over the Atlantic Ocean, but let me be sure to tell you, as those planes are flying in to perform at show center, they fly right over head of our beach home on 58th street. It is pretty exciting to see the precision, speed and sound of these planes right from our balcony. Of course it is best to be at 16th street, but when cleaning and preparing for guests right before our prime rental season starts, getting a performance right at your beach home isn’t bad either.
New this year for Ocean City beaches is the Dew Tour Extreme Sports. This is the first year for this event and it is to run from July 21, 2011 to July 24, 2011. Are you interested in seeing skate boarders and bicyclists showing off their stuff? Some of the participants in the past have been competitors with the Olympics for snowboarding. Since this is something new, I can not say I have yet seen such, but as Ocean City Maryland tries to keep entertaining visitors during their stay, this seems like something neat to visit this year as well.
An Ocean City Maryland traditon is Springfest 2011 Ocean City MD. This event for 2011 will be held May 5, 2011 to May 8, 2011. It is held at the boardwalk inlet area and has many craft and food vendors as well as great entertainment. The matching fall event like this spring event is the OC Sunfest and both are a great time to bring in and welcome out a beach season. This year George Jones and Richard Marx are the main musical events.
September 11, 2001 is a day most in our country will never forget. I can’t believe this fall will be the ten year anniversary of such. The day this tragic event happened, Randy and I were at our beach home on a week’s vacation. We will never forget what we saw on television that day and during the week when planes were finally allowed back to fly. How earily all on the beach watched something that wouldn’t usually catch our attention (Planes flying overhead), but when such did, how quiet it got and how all of our eyes were tracking such. In memory of such I want to remind those visiting the boardwalk to take a moment and visit the Ocean City Firefighter’s Memorial on the boardwalk and N. Division Street. It is a memorial not only for our local fire fighter’s, but for those that died on 9-11.
You will find many touching words left for the fire fighters. Words from everyday people and families left on bricks that lay out the floor for the memorial. There is also a piece of the World Trade Towers that survived and for one to touch. My family went to the opening of this memorial in 2006. To say the least this was something so touching and something we will never forget. Let me tell you when the other fire fighters from New York and other areas came to play the bag pipes and the words being spoken for its opening, not much of a dry eye or lump in the throat was left. While standing there and holding your children at the moment you could only hope a 9-11 never again happens in our or their time. It was something then that ran through my head and something I still hope never to happen here again.
We also have a brick from our family there as well. See if you can locate. I will give you a hint, my husband is an electrician so lighting is his trade. For irony our brick was placed near some as well. I think if you have a moment, especially this year for the 10th anniversary you might want to take a moment to stop at this memorial and reflect on what some very heroic people do to protect and save us and for the ones that lost their lives on 9-11 as well.
Well I hope that you had a nice weekend and hope that the snow of last week is finally to an end. If wanting to visit Ocean City Maryland or Lake Anna Virginia, please don’t hesitate to think of us and contact us for a place to stay during your visit. We’d love to have you as our guests.
Warmest wishes,
Donna
