I truly cannot believe the start of summer is here. We have had many repeat families come back to visit at our lake and beach homes and want to thank them as well as the new families that are coming this year.

Here is an update of what is still available for the lake and the beach:

Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove (Lake Anna Virginia)

  • June 9-16, 2012
  • June 16-23, 2012
  • Aug 4-11. 2012 (Someone is in contact with me for this date)
  • Aug 25 to Sept 1, 2012

Seeley’s OC Sandcastle (Ocean City, Maryland)

  • July 7-14, 2012
  • July 28- Aug 4, 2012
  • Aug 11-18, 2012
  • Aug 18-25, 2012

There are many new things happening at both places. Ocean City Maryland http://www.facebook.com/seeleysocsandcastle will be having weekly fireworks and laser shows and Lake Anna Virginia http://www.facebook.com/KindredSpiritsAtChildsCove is opening a new restaurant on the lake called Tim’s at Lake Anna. Please check out my Facebook pages for detailed information on both. That is where I try to post current things happening in the areas as well.

For updates regarding our homes, both homes over the winter/spring had updates as well. At the beach house we bought a new refrigerator and in the living room we put down a rustic light colored wood looking tile. At the lake we did a darked rustic wood looking tile in the kitchen, living room and dining room. Updated the kitchen lighting. Updated the stove, microwave and refrigerator as well. Outside new low voltage lighting was added to the landscaping. A big thank you to Mike Hyde (Our tile man), Dan Seeley and Randy Seeley (My honey do list man) for all the hard work they did. We hope those that have stayed before like the changes.

As I post this Memorial Day weekend please take a moment to thank those that have served or are serving our country. Without these folks we wouldn’t have the freedoms we currently enjoy. If you happen to be in Westminster MD this Monday there will be a Memorial Day parade and the children from St. Johns Catholic school will be a part of such to show their appreciation to our military families. Thank you dad, Uncle Cal, Uncle Al, Pappy Fuss and Bill Farroux for the time you served our country. We love you all.

Had a board meeting this weekend and while doing that as well as getting ready for rental season at 4:30 pm Sunday we are finally getting toes in the sand. A beautiful sunny afternoon for Mother’s Day and a quiet and wonderful time to watch and smell the ocean.

If you check out my Seeley’s OC Sandcastle Facebook page you will see some of the photos of the new color exterior painting of Sandpiper Dunes to be completed May 2011 and of the family. Yes Colby is growing and Randy and I are getting younger with age (Don’t laugh too hard)

There are also some photos of the Sunrise at different locations on our early morning ride Saturday to the beach to make it by 8am for a board meeting as well as Sunsets at two of our favorite restaurants (Fager’s Island and The Hobbit). Please note doing this with the smart phone is hard to review and type easily so I will be brief and try to update from my computer some time this weekend with more links to the restaurants and photos right on the blog.

I also know I have not blogged in a few weeks and owe some new recipes, but we have been pretty busy (as usual this time of year) getting ready for rental season for both homes. I hope to get such done in the next couple of weeks as well. I can’t believe Memorial Day is right around the bend and the true start of Summer is to begin. Hurray Hurray. Done with this chilly and wet spring.

For our home updates the main spring lake project was rebuilding the porch at the front door and the beach has been going through a face lift which caused all the balcony items to be kept inside our home for most of the off season. So we are really glad the refurb is almost completed.

Well have a good one and will catch up soon.

Kite at the MD International Kite Expo - OC Maryland

Well this month started off with a great April fools joke on us. We awoke to some white snow and a two hour delay for schools. Will old man winter please give up for 2011? I really hope so. This is April you know!

I thought this week I would list some things happening at Ocean City Maryland this year. Some of it is also very new for the beach this year. When coming to the shore it is always nice to enjoy the sun, ocean and sand, but there are lots of other things to do in Ocean City Maryland as well.

Have you ever wanted to see huge kites all different shapes and sizes? Watch the boardwalk become a beautiful rainbow of color or learn to fly one? Well April 29, 2011 to May 1, 2011 Ocean City will hold the Maryland International Kite Expo. My family has gone to such and the opening photo of this blog shows just some of the unique kites that are on display. This is a very family oriented event and there are many things offered for the kids to get involved with regards to the kites as well. We really enjoyed our day when we visited such and were very surprised of some of the sizes the kites were. One of the funniest moments was Randy and Colby racing with kites on their backs on the beach along with other parents. It truly is something those that put this event on make fun for the kids no matter the age.

Do you enjoy high speed excitement? The roaring of a jet flying by over the Atlantic Ocean? Then come out to see the Ocean City Air Show. This event for 2011 will be held from June 10, 2011 to June 12, 2011. The main show center is ocean front on 16th street over the Atlantic Ocean, but let me be sure to tell you, as those planes are flying in to perform at show center, they fly right over head of our beach home on 58th street. It is pretty exciting to see the precision, speed and sound of these planes right from our balcony. Of course it is best to be at 16th street, but when cleaning and preparing for guests right before our prime rental season starts, getting a performance right at your beach home isn’t bad either.

New this year for Ocean City beaches is the Dew Tour Extreme Sports. This is the first year for this event and it is to run from July 21, 2011 to July 24, 2011. Are you interested in seeing skate boarders and bicyclists showing off their stuff? Some of the participants in the past have been competitors with the Olympics for snowboarding. Since this is something new, I can not say I have yet seen such, but as Ocean City Maryland tries to keep entertaining visitors during their stay, this seems like something neat to visit this year as well.

An Ocean City Maryland traditon is Springfest 2011 Ocean City MD. This event for 2011 will be held May 5, 2011 to May 8, 2011. It is held at the boardwalk inlet area and has many craft and food vendors as well as great entertainment. The matching fall event like this spring event is the OC Sunfest and both are a great time to bring in and welcome out a beach season. This year George Jones and Richard Marx are the main musical events.

Ocean City Maryland Firefighter's Memorial

Ocean City Maryland Firefighter's Memorial

September 11, 2001 is a day most in our country will never forget. I can’t believe this fall will be the ten year anniversary of such. The day this tragic event happened, Randy and I were at our beach home on a week’s vacation. We will never forget what we saw on television that day and during the week when planes were finally allowed back to fly. How earily all on the beach watched something that wouldn’t usually catch our attention (Planes flying overhead), but when such did, how quiet it got and how all of our eyes were tracking such. In memory of such I want to remind those visiting the boardwalk to take a moment and visit the Ocean City Firefighter’s Memorial on the boardwalk and N. Division Street. It is a memorial not only for our local fire fighter’s, but for those that died on 9-11.

Piece from the World Trade Towers

Piece from the World Trade Towers

You will find many touching words left for the fire fighters. Words from everyday people and families left on bricks that lay out the floor for the memorial. There is also a piece of the World Trade Towers that survived and for one to touch. My family went to the opening of this memorial in 2006. To say the least this was something so touching and something we will never forget. Let me tell you when the other fire fighters from New York and other areas came to play the bag pipes and the words being spoken for its opening, not much of a dry eye or lump in the throat was left. While standing there and holding your children at the moment you could only hope a 9-11 never again happens in our or their time. It was something then that ran through my head and something I still hope never to happen here again.

We also have a brick from our family there as well. See if you can locate. I will give you a hint, my husband is an electrician so lighting is his trade. For irony our brick was placed near some as well. I think if you have a moment, especially this year for the 10th anniversary you might want to take a moment to stop at this memorial and reflect on what some very heroic people do to protect and save us and for the ones that lost their lives on 9-11 as well.

Well I hope that you had a nice weekend and hope that the snow of last week is finally to an end. If wanting to visit Ocean City Maryland or Lake Anna Virginia, please don’t hesitate to think of us and contact us for a place to stay during your visit. We’d love to have you as our guests.

Warmest wishes,

Donna

My boys working for rental season preparation

My boys working for rental season preparation

Last weekend we were at our home Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove which is at Lake Anna. We started getting ready for the rental season and checking out all the new changes in the area. There have been many since the beginning of the winter and we decided to venture out and offer recommendations to those guests coming to visit us this summer.

Almost Sunset at Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove

Almost Sunset at Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove

We started the day with visiting Island Mochas Lake Anna. It is a little coffee shop that serves breakfast, lunch, bakery treats and has Free Wi-Fi. It is right off rt 208 near the main bridge for the lake. The boys ate a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant. I had a berry smoothie and a slice of cake. (Yes it defeats the purpose of the heathly drink, but it was a moist coffee cake type that was beckening me) I don’t believe they have a website yet, but you can locate them on the Facebook link I made at the beginning of this paragraph. Their menu is also there under their photos. The staff was very friendly and it was something new to try out at the lake on a weekend morning.

Food Lion and Pharmacy at Lake Anna Virginia

Food Lion and Pharmacy at Lake Anna Virginia - Yes the little things get us excited at the lake.

Our next stop was to check out the new Food Lion. Yes, if you did not hear me, it was to visit and check out the new Food Lion. You won’t believe how much excitement having this store come to the lake there has been. Prior you had to travel to Louisa, Mineral, Culpepper or Fredericksburg. Now only 8-10 minutes from our home is a nice grocery store right on rt 208. It is a full sized store with a pharmacy. No more 2 hour round trip travels just to pick up something you may have forgot.  I truly love the ma and pa places at the lake and we certainly believe in sharing our time in visiting them, but this was just something that was missing.

Where better to work than at Lake Anna when this is the view

Where better to work than at Lake Anna when this is the view

We then went home and worked some more and then for the evening we decided to have dinner at the Asian Grille. Note when we are usually at the lake we make a nice meal out on our deck and savor the views, but we also try to at least one of the days when down to visit and eat somewhere locally. If you don’t visit and patronize the local businesses, they won’t be there down the road. It was just that so much had opened recently we wanted to try a bunch. Note the Asian Grille is also right next to the Island Mochas in the same shopping complex. They had menus (Which I have left at the house), but haven’t located a website or link for them yet. The food was great. If you have even been to a Japanese Steakhouse it is a smaller version of such. At our yearly home we have one and you sit around a large grill with about 10 people and they prepare the food right in front of you. Here they have one grill you can see depending where you are seated and they prepare your meals there and then bring them to you from the grill. They also prepare Sushi meals. We were seated quickly on a busy Saturday night. The food was very good and service was just as well. I recommend visiting again. When it warms up I believe they will have outdoor seating as well.

Silkie Fluff Ball with a Bad Hair Day

Silkie Fluff Ball with a Bad Hair Day

In past posts I have made mention that my son is involved with 4H and he with the help of mom and dad, raise a few chickens. Nothing is better than a fresh brown egg. In doing some of my local area searches for things of interest I located the The Mineral Business Associations Farmers Market. I have not tried it our yet since I just located this link after our visit down at Lake Anna, but it looked like a nice place to buy local produce and listed business that provide fresh produce. Again that, visit, patronize, shop near those local to the area mentality I have, have made this look like something to try out.

My Boys Taking a Walk Down the Drive

My Boys Taking a Walk Down the Drive

Well again what a better way than to have a work weekend at Lake Anna. If you happen to visit this year, please make sure to visit the locals. There is Ally’s Restaurant (We haven’t tried yet) and other shops. When we visit again I will be certain to give a heads up on what is happening. If you want to keep up on my blog or the happenings are the lake or the beach, please don’t hesitate to “Like” our Facebook business pages (Links below) and you will be updated with anything in the area as I post. (Which I try to do weekly on Sunday)

Assateague Island Wild Ponies

Assateague Island Wild Ponies

Assateague Island or also known as home to the wild ponies is certainly a much different feel from the hussel and bussel of Ocean City Maryland. This is an area of dunes and beach. As natural as you will get in the area. The ponies roam the area and you may even get to see one of the heards up close.

There is a small museum/nature center for the children to explore. It is hands on and there is a small tank with creatures to touch as well. There is also a small gift shop and ability to adopt one of the ponies to keep such a treasure going. I sugguest if you want to eat while visiting that you pack a lunch. The park is both State and National and there are grills to cook on. Be advised a poney may come to visit while doing so as well. Also on the bay side you can go clamming. There is a store near by (Before you enter the park) that you can rent a clam rake to do such. This is a family time that is without electronics. It is nature making family fun on its own. Again if you want to do something at a slower pace I suggest you check out the wild ponies at Assateague.

Since it was a holiday weekend we were able to stay until Monday. (Yeah)  It was also one of the windiest weekends to say the least (When I say windy I mean hang onto your child or they may blow away). Certainly not a fun weather beach weekend, but it was a perfect time to be inside and doing spring chores. It also left time for us to go running to the outlets in Rehoboth Delaware to update things for the beach house.

In thinking about what to write while at the beach last week since I know I wouldn’t get time to post from there, I thought I would tell you about our favorite breakfast place as well as a nice casual place in Delaware for dinner. (The later we usually visit on our way home from shopping at the outlet stores in Rehobeth. )

When my family gets down to the beach to have breakfast (If not being made at the house in Donna & Randy’s kitchen) the truly number one favorite for all, is The Generals’ Kitchen. It is truly a must visit for an Ocean City Maryland Breakfast. They are well known for their chipped beef (Remember I said I like to cook with heavy cream, well this dish of theirs is heavy creamy gravy), good food (Colby loves the pancakes/chipped beef & mommy likes the feta cheese omlet), quick service (Once you get in from waiting in their long, but quickly moving outside line) and affordable prices. The other favorite part for us is to see Miss Angela (AKA Mrs. Gus) who runs a tight ship over there at age??? (Well she is old enough to be my grandmother and I am nearing that right before 50 range), so you can try and guess her age. I would just say it is not the usual age for one to still run a restaurant. Go Miss Angela!! Senior power at the beach!

The General's Kitchen Ocean City Maryland

The General's Kitchen Ocean City Maryland

When looking on the net for information on the restaurant I came across this article from 2007 from Miss Angela. She is so spunky and when you see her she may even sing you an Italian song or tell you a story of long ago. She is always very kind to us and especially sweet to our son. The food might be great, but she is also part of the treat. We truly love to visit for the food and for seeing her.

Now note the restaurant is not huge or modern, but it is truly a place that is down home and that honors our police and fire fighters. You will find hats and many items that such organizations have donated to them. They are located right on 74th Street, Ocean Side on Coastal Highway (410-723-0477) right on the edge of a small hotel.

Please note that I wasn’t able to find a direct link for their restaurant or to their menu, but if you stay at our home Seeley’s OC Sandcastle, you will certainly find their menu waiting for your review.

Now after a long day of shopping at the Tanger Outlets at Rehoboth Delaware, we love to stop for a nice casual dinner and Bethany Blues BBQ Pit fits our bill. If you like ribs that fall right off the bone and an affordable meal in a nice place. This is the one for you. There are two locations, but the one we have only tried is located at Bethany Delaware. It is between the outlets and the ride home to our home in Ocean City Maryland so it is the perfect place to stop at. Their website also lists their menu as well. We have never had a bad meal and this last visit last weekend happened to be a Sunday evening and on that night they had an all you can eat special of ribs and 2 sides for $14.99. (They have baby backs and dry rubbed ribs plus lots more) One rack was enough for me, but that price was surely one to check out. It also has a bar and is much larger inside than it looks from the outside. Check their website because it has a lot of information on what they offer.

As my husband is lurking over my shoulder waiting to go out for dinner (We are child free tonight) I usually try and end my blog with some recipes, but today the boys worked on mucking /cleaning the chicken coop (The girls say cluck, cluck for happiness) and I worked on rental leases (It is the time of year our bookings begin – thank you to those that have already planned to visit either of our vacation rental homes this summer) so in closing I thought I would leave with a photo of some of Colby’s birds and a link regarding the Silkie Breed since I made mention of his chickens in my prior blog. Here are also some Images from Google of Silkie Chickens. They are really a great pet if a child is interested in showing a farm animal in the 4-H. They are very docile and easy to handle. Below are CoCoNut and Peepers. Peepers was hatched by one of our silkies last year so she is what we call one of the Seeley Home Grown Girls. No incubator. The mommy (Hen) laid her egg and 21 days later surprised us right before leaving for New York with a little black peep. Truly something neat to see and share as a family.

Being that I handle the booking and rentals of both as well as the websites and Facebook pages I just can’t at this time find time to run two blogs sites, so even though this blog is mostly on our Ocean City, Maryland vacation rental home Seeley’s OC Sandcastle, I also want to offer insight and information on Lake Anna as well as our vacation rental home, Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove. Photo below is the view off our dock.

To start off I will tell you about the lake and area and why you should check it out! (You really should!) It is still a little known secret in Virginia that is starting to expand. So if you like water fun, a large lake to cruise, fishing galore, family memories, relaxtion, sunsets, nature and more beyond belief, then Lake Anna should be on your list of places to visit and stay.

So you ask, just where is Lake Anna and what is there to do there?

Lake Anna is the second largest freshwater lake in Virginia. It encompasses over 13,000 acres. Three counties are part of the lake and it has a public (cold side) and private (warm side). It is also known for its bass fishing, long season for water fun, a beautiful State Park and just plain relaxation for families for great vacations. Here is more information listed with Wikipedia on the lake itself. Doesn’t the sunset just look wonderful?

We have been coming to Lake Anna since the spring of 2003. Specifically Mother’s Day 2003. Randy heard on public radio about Lake Anna and the wonderful area and properties there. We decided to take an over night trip to visit the area and check it out. It was my first Mother’s Day and we spent it driving around looking at lots and properties and enjoying the sights. We had been going to Deep Creek Maryland for vacations, but it was getting crowded and with us having a jet ski, hours to operate such on weekend or holidays were limited. We found Lake Anna Virginia and have never looked back. I would say it was probably what Deep Creek was 30 years or so. Still quiet, still ma and pa places and still a vast amount of land and water to cruise around on. It is changing some, but the lake is so huge I can’t imagine it getting as crowded on the waters at Lake Anna as Deep Creek can. It is also warmer waters because it isn’t in the mountains and because of the Power Plant. It is still quaint, friendly and a place you can truly relax when vacationing. I have nothing against Deep Creek Maryland, I just love Lake Anna Virginia.

Our home Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove is on the public side (Cold side), now note cold side still means in the month of May you can be swimming, tubing and water skiing in the water with out a wet suit. The cold side is the larger side, the commercial side so it also has the marinas and water front access to restaurants by boat. Currently there is Lake View Restaurant and the No-Wake Zone and The Anna Cabana Restaurant. A new boardwalk area near Stonewall Estates is being built which is to have water dining as well. There are some other new places that opened end of 2010 and 2011 and they are Ally’s Restaurant, Asian Grille, Lake Anna Island Mocha Coffee Shop and Chicken Neckers (Which is in the process of expanding).

If you check out my website Kindred Spirits at Childs Cove you will also see links to many more places and things to do in the area. Lake Anna is not far from Williamsburg, Washington D.C., Fredericksburg, Monticello, Richmond and Culpepper. We have had guests that just stay a week for a vacation on the lake as well as those that like to travel from the point of where our home is to these other venues. My personal site also has links on the index and links page as well for these places to see.

Tiramisu Recipe: Yes to all that know me this is close to the home made one I use when in the mood to make such. My family really, really loves this so it is when I really, really love them I will make it. My husband loves Tiramisu so much, when getting samples for our wedding cake many many years ago I happened to bring a piece of Tiramisu from the bakery just for him to enjoy. No, not to just enjoy in Randy’s eyes, was a must for our wedding cake. If you know anything about Tiramisu it isn’t a cake to stack and leave out pretty while the wedding party was going on. Well we did have Tiramisu for our wedding cake because I made a fake fondant cake to repesent one for us to cut into one. The Tiramisu was a delicious cake for our wedding. The staff only had to keep it chilled and marked in the kitchen so it was even cheaper to do. Now that was the part I liked. Cost cutting for a wedding.

In my February 2011 Southern Living Magazine, there was an article called “Bushel of Fun in the Lowcountry” It was about steaming oysters and some recipes for having such event. We love steamed oysters and enjoyed the article. When I looked up the link I found even more recipes. Here is the link for some additional seafood recipes Lowcountry Oyster Roast Made Easy.

Well if you didn’t know, my family is involed with the Carroll County 4-H and in particular we raise chickens. We have 11 chickens and it is an assortment of breeds. Four of our birds are regualr size hens and we get about three brown eggs a day from the girls (One is over the laying age, but lives a good retired life just hanging around-No oven stuffer roasters here!) The other birds are Silkies and four of them are hens as well. They lay little cream eggs and usually want to sit on them to hatch out. They always want to be mumas. I am asked can you eat their eggs too and the answer is certainly. About two of their eggs equal one of my regular size hens eggs. Anyhow it is something we enjoy to do and is something Colby really likes to participate in.

The reason I mention this is I was reading my March 2011 Country Living Magazine and found an article regarding The Haycation. It is where farmers are opening up their barn doors to overnight guests to spend a weekend there with their family. Here is the link to Featherdown.com  in case it would interest anyone. Sounds like fun and sounded like a nice thing to do if your children aren’t able to try out the farm life or the raising of farm animals (Pets in our case since they all have names and are spoiled rotten with heat lamps in the winter) Also in my September 2010 Southern Living magazine was a travel article as well on “Escape to a Secret Farm Hideaway”. Here are some links for that as well. To find a farm stay near you check the links or these farms, Serenbe Farms and Bucks and Spurs Guest Ranch. Not sure if I could talk Randy into such, but it looks like a fun family thing to try as well.
